Cavit is a leading co-operative in the mountainous Trentino region of northeast Italy. The winery was built in 1964, and today it unites 11 separate cellars and their combined 4,500 grape growers across 7,000 hectares of vineyard, to produce an impressively broad portfolio from an intriguing palette of indigenous and international grape varieties. The Bottega Vinai range uses only grapes specially selected from the most suitable vineyard plots. This means that just the top 3% of vineyard area available to them is used to source grapes for the Bottega Vinai wines.... and these are labour-intensive wines!
Lagrein is an ancient, lesser-spotted variety, thought to be related to Syrah, and ideally suited to these warm, sheltered vineyards nestled in the Trentino hills. A warm spicy nose with lightly smoky aromas, which mingle with plum, red berries and a hint of chocolate. The palate is finely structured with supple tannins and bright balancing acidity. Ripe plum and blackberry fruit lead to long, savoury finish with a typically Italian bitter cherry twist. Delicious served with grilled red meat, stews or pasta with a concentrated meat or tomato sauce.
Tasting Note:
