Picon Amer Liqueur is a legendary French aperitif, created in 1837 by Gaétan Picon. Its unique bittersweet profile is derived from a blend of dried orange peels, gentian root, and cinchona bark, which imparts a distinctive complexity and herbaceous character. Bottled at a lower ABV than in its original formulation, Picon Amer remains an essential ingredient in classic French cocktails. It offers bright notes of citrus—mandarin and orange zest—balanced by a savory, earthy bitterness and warm spice. This versatile spirit is traditionally enjoyed over ice with a twist of orange, or mixed with light beer to create the popular and refreshing Picon Bière. It is also an excellent substitute for Amaro in various drinks, adding depth and a sophisticated edge.
